1) 2013 Nobel Prize for Literature was awarded to Canada’s Alice Munro. The Swedish Academy made this announcement on 10 October, 2013. With this Munro became the …………women to be awarded this prestigious prize – 13th (She is also the first Canadian to win the prestigious honour. She was acclaimed as the “master of the contemporary story” by the Swedish Academy. Her important works include Dance of the Happy Shades (1968), Girls and Women (1971) and The Beggar Maid: Stories of Flo and Rose (1978))

2) The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) during October, 2013 constituted a committee to examine the feasibility of encrypted SMS-based fund transfers so as to boost mobile banking in the country. Who will head this committee? – B. Sambamurthy, Director, Institute for Development and Research in Banking Technology (IDRBT) – The committee will study challenges faced by banks in mobile banking. It will consider the advantages/ challenges of having a single application across all handsets in an SMS-encrypted environment. The committee will also look at any other solution to expand the reach of mobile banking and accordingly, draw a roadmap to implement those solutions)

3) India on 10 October, 2013 signed Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with how many countries for the ambitious Nalanda University project being built near the ruins of the ancient academic institution? – Seven (These seven countries are – Australia, Cambodia, Singapore, Brunei, New Zealand, Lao PDR and Myanmar. These seven countries have pledged their support for this project. These agreements are key to India’s plans to establish Nalanda University in Bihar as an institution of international repute)

4) Who will be conferred the Indira Gandhi Award for National Integration for year 2012 as announced on 10 October, 2013 by the award committee? – M S Swaminathan, renowned agricultural scientist (Swaminathan is also known as “The Father of Green Revolution. He has served as Director of the Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi (1966-72), Director General of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research and Secretary to the Government of India, Department of Agricultural Research and Education (1972-79))

5) India was the largest recipient of foreign remittances among the developing countries during 2012-13 according to the recently released report by World Bank titled ‘Migration and Remittance Flows: Recent Trends and Outlook-2013-16’. What was the total amount of remittance sent to India by Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) during the year? – $71 billion (Total remittance to India was larger than its total income from IT exports. China was second in this list with total remittances of $60 billion followed by the Philippines with $26 billion of remittance)

6) Who took over as the new Chairman & Managing Director (CMD) of Corporation Bank during October, 2013? – SR Bansal (Bansal was Executive Director of Punjab National Bank (PNB) before taking his new charge. Corporation Bank is a public-sector bank headquartered at Mangalore in Karnataka)
